Ide Shelling (Bora-Hansgrohe) felt that his erstwhile break away companions weren't doing enough to stay away from the closing peloton. So off he went on his own. I doubt he believe he could hold off the chasers, but with a Maillot Jaune dangling for whomever won the stage, it was worth the effort. Plus he already has one point in the best climber competition, and there are two more climbs (one being at the finish line of the stage.)
