Perhaps the prospect of an steep uphill finish led the sprints to decide that their best hopes for points towards the Green Jersey was the intermediate sprint in Basparts. It was Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) who showed off a great pair of legs besting Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Michael Matthews (BikeExchange) in a best of the rest sprint. Ide Schelling, Sagan's teammate, had already gone through two minutes before the peloton arrived.
