Omloop Het Nieuwsblad is the opening of the racing season in Europe and the Spring Classics mainly raised on Belgium roads. This early break had build up an eight minute lead on the peloton, but the time they had made the Halloweg cobbles their lead had been whittled down to just over a minute and a half. The group was made up of Juri Hollmann (Movistar), Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost), Morten Hulgaard (Uno-X), Donovan Grondin (Arkea-Samsic), Ruben Apers (Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise) and Alexander Konychev (BikeExchange-Jayco) leading them onto the next section of cobbles.
