While Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) attacked first, it was Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) who countered. Yet in the end, Pogacar had enough left to get round the Maillot Jaune on the climb up the airstrip to claim the stage victory. Yet with Vingegaard on his wheel all he managed after all of McNulty's work was a four second time bonus. So yes, he gained time but is still two minutes and eighteen seconds behind. That is a gap that Vingegaard can savely defend in the final time trial. But don't forget, there is still one more mountain top finish in the Pyrennes yet to go. And then there is always luck that can factor in to who gets to Paris, and what color jersey they are wearing when they get there.
