Matthieu Ladagnus (Groupama-FDJ) went off from the very first kilometer of the stage. He was chased by others, but the peloton wasn't really willing to let them go. So it was that Ladagnus found himself trying to ride 167.5 kilometers on his own. A tall order in most any circumstance, but highly unlikely on one of the last stages made for the sprinters.
